prior to the wedding celebrations a very important ceremony is held in which a couple is
engaged with each other in of the senior members of both the families. A wedding ring
is exchanged between the expected couple. This function is a proof that they are and
their wedding will take place at any fixed date agreed upon by both families.
Traditional
Traditional Pakistani wedding celebrations last for four days. On the very first day, the bride and groom's families are dressed in yellow and celebrate the upcoming nuptials separately.
Yellow colour symbolizes the day of ubton . From this day on, the bride is kept hidden from the groom's eyes till the marriage day. After some religious formalities, family and friends bring the bride/groom for ceremony. All sit in a circle with dholak and duff and sing throughout the evening.
The second day is reserved for a big celebration called Mehndi. This very colourful event is full of traditional dance and ancient songs. On this day. both the families exchange wedding dresses of bride and groom and on the same pattern Mehndi takes place at the bride's house to put mehndi on her hand and then at groom's place to put mehndi on groom's hand. Sometimes, both the families agree to hold
single function on the same day and split the cost.
On the third day, the actual wedding ceremony takes place. The celebration is arranged by the
bride's family and barrat comes to the bride's house. The groom wears a distinctive traditional to urban' where as the bride's gown is very celaborate as are her veil and jewellery. Nikah
is the signing of official paper work in presence(Sir) of a Maulvi. Now, the couple is declared
husband and wife. A dinner is served by the bride's family: Rukhsati is the last event of this wedding day. The Holy Quran is held over the new bride's head as she joins her husband's family on fourth day.
The couple hosts their first dinners as husband and wife. The groom's family invites all the guests to
their home for a feast. The newly married couple welcomes the guests and then mingles with them through the dinner.
